Club History
The Huntingdon Valley Ski Club was formed in 1965. A group of friends looking to ski Europe discovered that you had to be a member of an organized ski club for at least six months to participate in the European ski trips sponsored by an existing ski club. In addition, one needed a letter from the club president to verify their membership. Determined to ski Europe, they tried to join a club, but were informed that the club had a membership "cap" and could not accept new members. Undaunted, they decided to start their own club. They advertisied in a local newspaper, announcing the time and place of a meeting at a nearby motel to see who was interested. Over 200 people turned out for the meeting and most wanted to join.
Over the years the HVSC has supported an active Junior club and once maintained a ski hill of their own. Insurance costs and other concerns forced the closing of the hill. In lieu of that facility the club turned to running a variety of ski trips locally in PA and to New Engand, Maine, Western U.S.A. and Europe. The club's success in running trips can't be measured any better than by the fact that, over the last 24 years, trips have been run to New England and Colorado with participants numbering in the range of 85 to 120.
In keeping with the times, the club has been actively attempting to enroll as members the younger generation of winter sport enthusiasts that have opted to become snowboarders.
