                                       President’s letter, Summer 2008
Your board has been discussing the club dues
structure over the past few weeks, a discussion
prompted by an end of the year financial review of club
finances for the fiscal year 2007 - 2008.

First, here’s what your dues pay for. They pay
for, all of our special activities, like the “elcheapo”
Holiday dinner (a very large expense), both of
the opening and closing meetings free Pizza parties,
all of the expenses to create and mail out the
newsletter, plus charitable gifts for members who
participate in charity events, and “Sunshine Baskets”
for club members who are experiencing sickness or
family trauma, and last, but not least, your
eligibility to go on club trips. That’s a lot of stuff
to get for your annual dues. So, after 10 years with no
change, your board has reluctantly raised the annual
dues by 5 dollars.

Let me stress that it’s veryimportant for you to send your dues in on time.
To be in good standing, dues must be paid during the time
frame May 1st through the 1st general meeting in Oct.
Sending in you dues during that interval will insure
that you are eligible for all club activities and will
guarantee your inclusion into the club membership book.

Now, for those folks who find themselves delinquent,
their dues will be good for the remainder of the ski
year after receipt of their check. More importantly,
they will still have to pay their dues again during the
next May – Oct time frame. If you find that you are
delinquent at the time of one of our subsidized club
activities you will be expected to pay the full prorated
cost of that club activity (certainly an
incentive to pay on time). Payments can be sent
directly to our treasurer, at the following address:

Joe Gorman
1228 Longshore Ave.
Phila., PA 19111

So why procrastinate, send in your check today to
sign up for the 2008-2009 ski season?

The Cape Cod & Nantucket Bike Trip
What a terrific bike trip! The trip ran from June 7th – 13th. The weather was just perfect
for riding the Cape (we kept getting reports of “the sticky hot weather” in the Phila. Area). All
thirteen of us met at the Old Sea Pines Inn in Brewster, MA about 3 pm on June 7th, to have our
21 speed bikes fitted to us. That night we had a delicious Italian dinner to prepare us for the next
days ride. There was so much extra food left over that we saved much of the antipasto and
chicken parmesan as appetizers for our regular “Druid meetings” under the trees each cocktail
hour (credit Klaus Fuelleborn with those meetings). Have you ever had cannolis for breakfast?
Ask Shelly Caplan about that one!

Riding the Cape Cod Rail Trail (CCRT) was a great experience…not too difficult and,
thank God, it was mostly in the shade. We rode past salt marshes and ponds and stopped at the
Brooks Academy Museum to learn about the cranberry industry and cranberry bogs/ponds. That
night the HVSC “Druids” met again for much adult refreshments, jokes and conversation, ending
up with another spectacular dinner (wonderful, wonderful Halibut)!

On our next day we resumed riding on the CCRT and visited the Cost Guard Station and
Nauset Light Beach (remember Thoreau’s classic, Cape Cod?). You have to experience the sun
and the surf and the sand and the atmosphere to appreciate the ambiance of “Cape Cod”…..we
did.

The next morning we visited the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History and returned to
the Inn where we transferred by car to Hyannis to board the ferry for our “sea voyage” to
Nantucket. The ferry ride was absolutely beautiful, with brilliant sun-shine, calm seas and mild
winds. Shelly Caplan kept the whole group entertained during the voyage with his “philosophy
of life”. The weather was perfect, the winds favorable and the company just terrific!
On Nantucket, we rode to Madaket on the west end of the island, and then visited the
Nantucket Whaling Museum for a wonderful lecture and experience about whaling. That night
we had another unbelievable meal…food, food and more food!

The next day we biked to Siasconset to explore the cliffs and beaches of east Nantucket
with its quiet roads and bicycle trails. Vistas of light houses and houses with trellises of flowers
growing over the walls and roofs of the homes greeted us as we rode along the trails. This was
followed by a tour of “Old Town Nantucket”. Oh, God! Another night of food, food and more
food!

On our last day we biked into Nantucket and bid farewell for our ride home on the ferry.
No whales were to be found anywhere, but we all had a great time talking and laughing and
enjoying the sea voyage.

As a special tribute, I have to thank both Shelly Caplan and Jim Howat for their
unabashed sense of humor. They made our trip an unmitigated success and kept us in stitches
every night and day. We were privileged to have then on our trip.
